Honourable Mention Award Winner Tower of Song by Pamela Carter Oil on canvas, 48” x 60”
Juror Comments: Like the song it was named after, this painting expresses solidarity in tumult. The composition features powerful movement, both in the picture plane and in depth. Paint handling and use of colour both contribute to this outstanding work.
This award is sponsored by Gilbert & Lighthall Marketplace.
Over her career, Pamela Carter has explored a wide spectrum of painting genres, initially with pastels, and now exclusively with oils; from landscape and still life to figures, urban scenes and portraiture. In recent years, she has embarked on an exploration of abstract painting where her skills in drawing and textural brushwork combine with her understanding of colour and composition in unexpected and exciting ways. She moves effortlessly between vivid abstraction and arresting realism, each genre nourishing the other.
In the spring of 2014, Pamela Carter traveled to Provence to study with master Plein Air painter Julian Merrow-Smith. Her prize winning work has been featured in numerous arts-related magazines, including International Artist and The Pastel Journal.
