The Wolf by Joanna McFarland
Acrylic on canvas, 48" x 60"

Joanna McFarland's non-objective work is inspired and informed by music, especially Jazz, Blues, and classical guitar. She takes liberties with her paint and is free in her choice of colour, shape, and form in response to sound. Following in the footsteps of 20th Century abstract expressionists, McFarland feels an affinity with contemporary non-objective painters such as Kazuo Shiraga, Saburo Murakami, and Lila Lewis Irving.

McFarland paints with acrylics on canvas and stone paper, a paper-like product manufactured from calcium carbonate bonded with a high-density polyethylene. The paper is smooth, white, and non-absorbent. Paint can be manipulated freely and areas can be washed off the reveal layers of colour beneath.
